Restorative Dentistry involves the diagnosis and repair, or replacement, of damaged or defective teeth. Tooth structure can be missing due to decay, deterioration of a previous restoration, or a tooth fracture.
Restorative treatments include:
- Fillings – most common dental restoration
- Crowns – a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a tooth to restore shape, size, strength and appearance
- Bridges are fixed dental restorations replacing missing teeth by joining false teeth permanently to adjacent teeth or implants
A dental filling is a procedure to remove the diseased part of the tooth and fix the structural loss of a tooth as a result of a cavity/hole. The tooth could also need a filling if there is traumatic loss of a part of the tooth structure or a previous filling has been lost.
A crown is a restoration that fits over the whole remaining part of a tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape of a natural tooth. A crown is sometimes known as a ‘cap’. A crown is recommended when there is extensive tooth structure loss and a filling will not be strong enough for normal function.
