Top Tips on How to Brush Your Teeth: Dental Health Week 2017

Brushing Technique

You should brush from the back to the front of your mouth. Place the toothbrush bristle at the gum line on a 45° angle and brush gently in a circular motion with manual toothbrushes. Or, if you’re using an electric toothbrush, make sure you allow the toothbrush to brush every surface of a tooth for one to two seconds each before moving on to the next tooth. You should spit out the toothpaste once you have finished brushing.

Correct Technique

Use a Soft-Bristled Toothbrush

The key to brushing is relative gentleness. If you scrub too hard, you could damage your gums or cause gum recession. That is why a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head is always recommended so you can remove plaque from even your back-most teeth.

Other Quick Tips

  • Brush for two minutes at least twice a day, once in the morning, once at night.
  • Brushing your tongue reduces the bacteria in your mouth and helps with bad breath.
  • Rinsing after brushing isn’t necessary as leaving some residual toothpaste can strengthen your teeth enamel.
  • Your toothbrush is ready for replacement when the bristles start spreading apart or every three months (whichever occurs first).
